Keep both parts
A backup is a saved copy of your space from a particular moment. The recovery code is a credential used to open that encrypted data. A code without the file cannot recreate lost content. A backup without its matching code is not a recovery plan either.
Export a snapshot
In Veil Settings, open Backup & transfer and choose Export encrypted backup. Save the .veil file to a location you can find again. The current preview limits a backup to 512 MB including packaging, and each source file to 100 MB. Wait for the export to finish; locking or canceling discards an unfinished export.
Test with a small sample
Before relying on the process, make a small space containing a disposable note and photo. Export its backup, return to recovery, select the file and enter the matching code. Choose a new pattern. Restore creates another local space, so confirm its contents and pattern before changing anything in the original. Save the new recovery code shown after restoration. New backups from that restored space use the new code; keep the old code for older backup files.
Separate the code from the file
Choose places you can still reach if the phone is unavailable. Avoid keeping the only code inside the same device or sending the code and backup together through one exposed channel. Record which code belongs to which backup without placing the secret itself in a public filename.
Update after changes
A file backup does not follow later edits. Export again after important additions or changes and confirm which snapshot is newest. The preview’s online backup and sync are not live services; do not depend on those screens to protect new content.
Purchases are a separate recovery task
Restore purchases asks Apple to restore your paid entitlement. It does not restore the space, pattern or files. If you reinstall Veil, you may need both purchase restoration and file restoration. Keep the backup routine even if you buy lifetime access.
